Lance is passionate (some might say fanatical) about helping organizations achieve their peak levels of quality, productivity and efficiency.
After graduating with his MBA degree from the Indiana University School of Business Bloomington (now the Kelley School of Business) in 1992, Lance began his career in operations management and process improvement, starting out as a production supervisor in a small electronics company, and moving on to positions with 2 management consulting firms, where clients included Tier I and II suppliers to the automotive industry.
Lance returned to hands-on operations management in a mid-sized manufacturing facility in the fall of 1995, first as a supervisor and then as production manager. As production manager, he was responsible for the work performed by 45 full-time operators using high-speed equipment, 75 contract manual assembly staff, and 5 supervisors, across 2 departments in a 3-shift JIT operation, involving the production of over 250 SKUs. In this role, Lance combined lessons learned from his previous supervisor positions and his management consulting experience. He quickly realized that all the best practices training from the top consultants in the world are useless unless:
After proving the effectiveness of his management techniques in a traditional manufacturing setting, Lance returned to his role as a process improvement consultant, this time applying his talents and experience at a large financial services firm. There he repeatedly demonstrated that the same management methods and tools that worked in a traditional manufacturing or warehouse environment were just as effective when applied to back-office processes.
As a result of his efforts, he was promoted to Assistant Vice President in one of the company's insurance production units, where he continued with his earlier management successes. In one notable case, an area under his leadership managed to drastically cut work backlogs, increase process quality, and get more work done with 17 staff on straight time alone than had previously been completed with 25 staff with overtime—with results achieved in less than 12 weeks, and continuing long after Lance had rotated to a new assignment within the company.
Lance's management and process improvement background in the Life, Annuity and Health insurance services sector includes work in premium administration, policy benefits, policy change, claims adjudication, agent commissions, suspense clearing and account reconciliation. Along the way, Lance has successfully managed several corporate mergers, involving project teams of 100+ members, from dozens of production and IT support areas, and affecting up to 750,000 policyholders at a time. Each merger was completed on time and below budget, with minimal customer and agent inquiries.
Lance has been trained in a variety of process improvement and best-practice management techniques, including lean manufacturing, single-minute exchange of die (SMED) principles, process re-engineering, ISO standard, and Six Sigma.
In his spare time, Lance serves as a student career Mentor at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business (Bloomington).
